This guest house was designed for two scholars who spent extensive time in North Africa. The design incorporates certain spatial qualities and details from this region, while respecting the local vernacular and the design of the existing house.

The guest house is a modern interpretation of a carriage house, with 800 SF of living space above a garage. Carved into the hillside, the guest house, stone retaining walls, and trellis frame the entry courtyard to the main house. The living area consists of a large room, lined with built-in-book shelves and French doors that open onto a covered porch. Behind this living area is a raised sleeping alcove, dressing area, and bathroom with a deep walk-in shower inspired by the North African bath.
